2006

I would like to extend Christmas wishes to so many people here. A year ago, I barely had heard of Anthon, Iowa, and now even though I've never been there, I feel I could walk it's streets and know where I was, and certainly feel like I was home.
My grandmother's diary, written in 1906 in Anthon, is being printed in book form as I type and without the help of Vickie and several other people here, I could not have completed it with as much information about people and places that she (Grandmother) mentions.
Again, best wishes for a wonderful, safe Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Merry Christmas to everyone in Anthon. My visit to Anthon this past summer was truly wonderful. Seeing my old classmates, Ray Wilson, Larry McDermott and Carol Renneker was truly memorable. Touring the old St. Joseph school WOW.
Now that one of my brothers is moving back to Anthon I am sure my visits will be more often. Happy New Year as well.

Thanks for those Thanksgiving Day stats. I was one of them that checked in on Thanksgiving Day. How do so many people from all over the world know about Anthon,IA? We have roots in Anthon and are still connected to so many there but why all the other visitors? Maybe some of them could start leaving us comments of what they think of Anthon and could share the similarites with their home towns with us. Anyway keep up the great work. We sure appreciate being able to come home if only via the internet.
Happy Holidays
P.S. For those of you who don't know - Vickie and the Am. Legion Auxiliary did a great job of honoring our Veterans for Veterans Day. My Father-in-law, Joe was said to be very surprised and touched by the whole night. Maybe you could share some of the pictures with us from out of town.

What a lovely vibrant community you have. More years ago than I care to remember (about 45 I think), I exchanged letters for a brief period with a girl, from Anthon, called Sandra Chicoine. It has been a great pleasure to get an even better "feel" for your community via the internet.

Recently visited your lovely town of Anthon in early September and was taken back by its beauty. So greeen and loved all the rolling hills. The people were so friendly and welcoming. Parents raised 6 kids there (Ed and Esther Hudgel) and I was the seventh one and I was raised in Arizona. Finally got to see Anthon and had the most wonderful day walking your town. So blessed to be able to experience it.

We appreciate your comments, questions, hello's, and all that you share on the guestbook page, but PLEASE do NOT advertise or place links to websites that are business in nature, or websites that are not family or child friendly websites. Your own personal website links are just fine as long as you aren't selling anything, linking to chat rooms, or blogs. Let's keep our Guestbook clean and family friendly or I will have no other choice but to take the Guestbook Page off the website completely. Thank you. VSB~webmaster

So sorry about the hailstorm. I hope the damage ultimately is not too great. Your photographs are wonderful despite the reason for taking them. Gives me a better idea of what that area looks like. On another note - my grandmother's diary is in the printing process and we are waiting for the preview copy to arrive in order to check for typos, make changes etc. Will let you know when its ready so I can send you a copy - I could not have gotten this far with it without your help!! Just by luck I happened onto your Website. I was born in Anthon June,1936. My parents were Leonard and Bertha McDermott. Due to crop failure, my folks moved to California in Aug, 1936. Have a few relatives still in Anthon area _ Uncle Harold and Aunt Loy McDermott live in Washta, Cousin,Donna Hoag lives in Correctionville, and the Dolores McDermott Faimily lives in Oto. In July this year, my younger brother, Mac and I ventured out from So, Calif and had a great time experiencing RAGBRAI. Even though I've visited Anthon over the yaers, this one was special. Adrenaline was flowing, as I rode into town, on Sunday morn. Seeing relatives and meeting new ones, especially Lynn McCormick from Anthon - and some of the Donovans (Their Mom was Alice McDermott) who live near the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids area. For me rest of RAGBAI continued along this same vein. For my younger brother, Mac. Iowa was a culture shock, as folks opened up their homes and hearts to total strangers. What came natural to these folks was foreign to most Californians (Non-Iowa transplants). We savored every moment of this adventure, in fact, Mac, who was my support person, wants to be a rider next year. Would like to say, "Iowa, you are great hosts, especially Anthon." and thanks for allowing me to partake in your forum. Frank McDermott - San Clemente, CA

It is great to see the pictures of the class of 66 reunion. I see many familiar faces there, farm neighbors, sport team mates, a fellow trombone player and several band and chorus mates, fellow MYF members and all great inspirations to those of us who came after and great examples of what small towns and their educational systems can accomplish especially in rural northwest Iowa. I was especially happy to see that Mrs. Helen Townsend attended the celebration. I was fortunate to have her as a teacher and although I had many teachers before her and many since, she exemplified the greatest attributes of the teaching profession. I see many for example in the class of 1966 whose professional careers and success can be directly tied to her influence. I might add that when these groups gather, it is a good bet that the name Vernon White comes into play in some exchange between class members. Mr. White, may he rest in peace, was also a great inspiration to us all. Finally, I would like to tell Ron Thompson that my short term memory may be "shot" but I remember is Granda George Jerman and his family very well. After a hard day shelling corn at some location north and west of Anthon, I could always count on George or one of his drivers to drop me off at home as they took the last load of corn to town. Great people and great memories!

Vicky, Mike Mc from Class of 1966 checking in. Much to comment on but will try not to hog the website tonight. Lowell Pattison: I was in junior high and working at the Anthon Herald as a "printer's devil". Lowell and Vernon Lundquist taught me how to set type by hand, run a linotype, and print stationery and business cards. Vernon later let me write football and basketball stories from AO. Lowell was a patient mentor and I learned a lot from him. The fire: Former home of the IH dealer, they were considred the "competition" by my Dad who worked at the John Deere store (as well as being a rural mail carrier). But they were friendly competitors and always helped each other out. I remember riding with Franic Meyer (when he worked for Marvin Jansen at the JD store) and we picked up an IH product and brought it in for the predecessors of Mike Sauser and Don Hamann...now that was cooperation! Inez Groth: what a wonderful, wonderful lady. She was always so good to us as teenagers. I can still remember "her pew" at St. Joseph's Church. Bet most Catholics of my era can remember exactly where "their pew" was! Pat O'Connell: I barely remember him but wow what an accomplished individual he was. And what tributes from his family...something I'm learning is much more important than...how important we think we really are. Fran Carr: My hats off to Fran for the terrific job he is doing at reconnecting friends and family for the Carr-O'Rourke (and just about anyone else who wants to claim they are related!)reunion coming up in June. The Class of 1966 will be gathering the same weekend for our 40th (must be a mistake!) reunion...beginning Friday night at the Fireside. I know that Frank Wood, Sharon Timmerman Hening, Marilyn Francis Drake, Pat Craig, Susan Peterson Craig, possibly Linda Weber Podewils will all be there. Marilyn Drake told me tonight that responses are slow in coming in but I reminded her that's the way our group usually responds anyway! We welcome anyone from classes in/around that year to join us please! Vicky, please remind Marvin to bring you with him. We've long considered you part of the class! Hey Tex USA, Your April 5, 2006 message mentions your being told "the mayor said no to helping D&K to rebuild - told them to go to Correctionville." Anyone who knows this Mayor would know this is not true. I called the "K" of D&K, aka Ken Garber, while the ashes were still hot, and asked if we as a City Government could help in any way. Subsequent to that I again called K on 04/06/06 offering our assistance in any legal way. K expressed appreciation and stated he still needed appraisals to reach a settlement with his insurance company. This Mayor wishes to keep the business in Anthon if at all possible. If you have any further questions/comments please feel free to contact me directly at mikbeth1@msn.com. Thank you. Mike Sauser, Mayor Anthon, IA

Vicki-love your page and keep up the good work. I have gotten the local paper every since I left the area. Love having the paper on-line as our local paper is no longer on line and stinks. I remember so many of the people that have messages and that makes then very interesting. For many years my father (Kenneth Shever) and I shared the paper and he got to read it first so he always told me I got the old news as he had already read the new news. Just keep up the GOOD work as it is enjoyed many times over. Kathy

Thanks Vicki for such a great job with the website. I can honestly say that we check the site almost daily. It sure helps those of us who have lived in Anthon and still have lots of family around and still consider ourselves part of the community. What a tragic fire however we can all be thankful that it wasnt worse or that the wonderful volunteers that protect Anthon and its residents werent hurt. Please dont give up on the website, those of us with roots in Anthon sure appreciate being able to go back and check in with the goings on. Keep up the GREAT JOB! Lisa Harbaugh

Excellent job, Vicki. My sister living in the suburban Chicago area sent me this link, a fact I am almost ashamed to admit. Your article, the photographs...it all touched my heart very deeply. I was on my way to work yesterday morning shortly after 6:30 when I realized what was happening. I was instantly ill, quite literally. It was a much longer drive to work than usual. I am in awe of the tireless efforts of the volunteer fire and rescue crew members in our town and I am grateful that we are live in a community that can so readily count on the generous assistance of our surrounding towns. I am most grateful, though, for the memories of that old, one of a kind, building and perhaps even moreso for the job opportunity it lent to Don and my father. I think I can speak for all of the children of both of our families when I say we have had a pretty blessed life, thanks in large part to the way we were raised by great parents in an equally great community. The building may be gone, but the memories will remain in our hearts forever. Thanks again, to Vicki and to all of you.

Way to go yet again, Vickie! Great coverage on the D & K fire! I was also glad to see a photo of the building before the fire. My dad worked there for many years when it was Hamann-Sauser, it was very sad to see the building go up in flames. It was amazing to see all the communities working together. This is a great place to go to find out anything about Anthon, past and present. Thanks, Vickie, for ALL you do to keep this website up and running! There's so many of us who would be lost without it!

What awesome pictures of the fire! You did a great job! It is so wonderful to have someone willing to volunteer their time to do such a great thing to keep former Anthon residents in touch with what is happening "back home." The rest of this comment can be meant for the "anonymous" person that made such rude entries about the webpage’s being updated. First of all-I don't see that person doing anything productive- If that person doesn’t like how it looks-don't look. Go somewhere else and look. Or well...build your own website! Their comments are a reflection of themselves-not you Vickie (or the great job you do with the website!) I didn't realize that there was someone left in this world that was that desperate for attention that they had to say such hateful things to create an uproar of support from the web guests who do enjoy the website. I'm curious if that is what they wanted was attention? Seriously-who is that mentally sick to crave attention like that? If I were them I'd start spending more time searching for a good psychiatrist in the yellow pages than bitching about a website that is awesome and calls for nothing but praises! It’s sad that some people still have to put others down to make themselves feel better or feel in control. I think the website looks great! And again-if that “Anonymous” person is so unhappy with the webpage’s then why do they still coming back to look at it? (I’m serious about them finding a good shrink!) We appreciate all you do and I’m sure we don’t tell you enough Vickie-Great Job!

I was shocked to get on here today and see the fire! I remember walking by that building daily as my house was a block away. I don't think Anthon has seen a fire of that magnitude since the Cozy burnt down. It will definitely be a loss and I hope Anthon will be able to rebuild. I'm truly thankful that no one was injured in the fire. Vickie I think you do a fabulous job with the website and am grateful for all that you do on a volunteer basis. Without this website I would lose touch with all of the happenings in Anthon. I find it appauling that someone without a back bone can sit and complain about the lack of news on this site. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think this site was intended to be a breaking news station of sorts... rather a way for patrons, past & present community members or relatives of previous/current community members to stay connected, share their heritages and just enjoy the joys and sense of community through the eyes of a small rural town in the midwest. I may live in a big city now and enjoy it, however, there are many things I do miss about living in a small town... Anthon! I have many good memories there! Some that I have shared with my own children. Again, Vickie, thank you for all that you do, you are appreciated more than you know!

What heartbreaking photos and a tragic loss for the Anthon community! I hope that this lot does not remain empty for long and that the community can revitalize itself from this fire. While many of you have suggested that Vickie delete the anonymous posting, I know that she would hesitate to do so, believing in freedom of speech. I would like to say that this anonymous person has only proven only two things by their entry below: they are cowardly, as they did not sign the even their name, and also they are ignorant about this website and copyright laws in general. In my opinion, ignorance is not excusable. If this person wants to see news from the Sioux Valley News on a website (which is not even devoted solely to the Anthon & Oto communities anymore, but to the communities of the Little Sioux Valley in general), they should petition the owners for the Sioux Valley News to make a website featuring their news. The fact that SVN doesn't have a website (to my knowledge based on extensive Google searching) simply proves how time consuming websites are. Besides, they want you to PAY for their news, whereas at anthoniowa.com, local patrons are more than willing to support such a far-reaching website in order to support their community! Many thanks to them and to Vickie for all of her time and efforts!

First, thank you for the breaking news about Anthon. Fire is so awful and my heart goes out to those who are losing something important in their town and their business. I appreciate so much this site. It homey, user friendly and so important for future generations. I have found out more about the lives of my grandparents since finding this spot than I ever could have on my own, thanks to Vicki's wonderful help and the taking of her own time to do some research for me. I wouldn't post anyone's comment who does not give their name. Thank you again and if anyone recognizes anyone in any of the photographs I've posted, please email me. I was visiting the website and sharing it with my students here at AOMV since they were all so curious as to what was going on. After class I browsed through the guest book and couldn't believe the stupidity and rudeness of the chicken that wouldn't even sign their name or use their real e-mail address to complain about the web site. Get off your duff and make your own web page if you don't like this one. Geez Louise, people. Seriously, life's too short. If you don't like this one, don't visit it. Vickie, you ought to delete messages like that if that person won't even use their real name or e-mail address when complaining. I think that this web site is neat to have and looks very nice.

I was so sorry to hear about the implement burning. I can remember as a child going into "Hamman-Sauser" with my dad and getting parts for tractors or some kind of machinery and getting a piece of bubble gum out of the machine. Or a soda of some kind. It will really make the corner look bare with out that building there. Hopefully it will be rebuilt and Anthon can have it back. I think the Anthon and Surrounding Towns Fire Dept deserve a big back on the back. Without them other businesses could have been lost. Great Job Guys. Take care y'all. Stacy O'Connell Stacy O'Connell

Lucky for our webpage visitors that I had to take today off and was able to run to town and get photos of the fire early this morning. Which I was glad to do. Unfortunatley and probably unknown to MOST visitors to the Anthon web pages, my work with the Anthon web site is ALL VOLUNTEER. I am NOT a paid reporter, paid webmaster, paid anything. The Anthon web site is my HOBBY. It is my way of giving back to the community and those who hold Anthon near and dear. The web pages began in 1997 as a college project for me and after the assignment was complete, I offered the web pages to the town of Anthon at one of the town coucil meetings, and at the time, my offer (valued in dollar amount at the time was over $5000.) was declined. I felt it was important that Anthon have a place on the internet and so I purchased the domain name and put the webpages on a server in Des Moines. I also found that it was way too expensive for my husband and I to use our own funds to keep Anthon on the internet for everyone elses enjoyment. So I asked local business people and individuals in the community to donate funds and in return I would put their business 'card' on a Patron's page. ALL DONATED FUNDS GO TO PAY FOR THE MONTHLY EXPENSES FOR THE WEB PAGES - I DO NOT KEEP ONE PENNY OF IT! When the funds run out, which maybe in 12 months or 2 years (depends on how much is donated) I then send out letters to past Patrons and ask (only once-as I won't beg)if they would like to be Patrons again. If they accept and decide to donate, the web pages for Anthon will stay up and running until the money again runs out - which could be 12 months, 2 years, or 6 months - THE WEB PAGES WILL STAY UP AND RUNNING AS LONG AS PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN SEEING THE WEB SITE AND BECOME PATRONS. IF AND WHEN THERE IS NO MORE MONEY TO PAY FOR THE BILLS, THE WEB SITE WILL GO DOWN. I will still own the domain name for several years to come, unless someone wants to purchase that from me and then they will be able to do what they want with the www.anthoniowa.com domain name. I can't quit my day job, to run around (usually) and take pictues for the web pages when news strikes. I can't afford to run around and ask people for their news either. That is why IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR WEB PAGE VISITORS TO SEND ME THEIR NEWS, SEND ME THE PHOTOS, SEND ME WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE ON THIS WEB SITE. THIS IS YOUR WEB SITE! BROUGHT TO YOU BY OUR PATRONS WHO PAY TO KEEP THE SITE UP AND RUNNING ON THE SERVERS IN DES MOINES. IF YOU DON'T SEE WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE HERE ON THE WEB SITE - GET BUSY! DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! YOU - J.Q. PUBLIC MAKE THIS WEB SITE WHAT IT IS. When I win the lottery, I may be able to quit my day job and run around town or set in the coffee shop and find out the latest news, but until then....IT IS ALL UP TO YOU! My (volunteer) job is to put what you send me on the web pages, and upload that to the servers. I DO LOVE MEETING ALL THE PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO VISIT THIS WEBSITE. (They don't all sign in on the guest book, or leave a message on the guest book. Most of them just send e-mails to me directly.) I enjoy my hobby just like everyone else enjoys their hobbies, and like I said, as long as we have Patron's to the web pages, we will have them up and running, but I CAN'T BRING YOU THE LATEST NEWS, PHOTOS, OR NOTICES, THAT IS YOUR JOB! Thank you all so much for sharing your thoughts, your ideas, and your news, greetings, sorrows, and notices. These web pages are what YOU MAKE THEM TO BE! KEEP IN TOUCH PLEASE!

My grandmother, Madge Overstreet Pearce, grew up in the Anthon, Oto, Piero area. She was married at the little church in Piero and I have a photograph of the church as well as her home. I also have photographs of her with a friend by the name of "Ethel Witt", others include Lillian Morgan. I am in the process of transcribing her diary from 1906 which she wrote as a young girl, living on her family farm outside of Anthon. I tried to email some of these photographs to this site but got no response. My grandfather was Harry Pearce, who also grew up in the Anthon area - he had many brothers and sisters and his father was Levi L. Pearce. I am most willing to share my historical pictures and the diary when I finish transcribing it. I'm trying to identify the various people mentioned in it as well as locations like Sargeants Bluff. She mentions many names in the diary, churches, places etc. If anyone is interesting or has connections please email me. Mary Mary

My Grandfather, Jesse Leo Benton was the local barber in Oto in the early 1900's. His wife, Bernice Green, was my grandmother. I'm told she was the town postmistress. After raising four children,I have some time on my hands and love learning about my past. I have some old Oto photos with people I can't identify. Vicki, Thanks so much for adding the "Remember When" section. I have really enjoyed the letters from Roy Pitkin to his beloved Pauline. I remember "Pit" so well, his heavy dark eyebrows and gravelley voice and his kindness. Pauline, of course, we all remember well--a beautiful, gracious lady. Vickie The Santa Claus link is a great place for kids to visit. A very neat site. I have signed up for the Santa Clau phone call so my granddaughter can hear from Santa on Christmas eve. I think she will be thrilled. You do have the best website I have ever visited. Keep it up.

Vicky, You have one of the best websites going - bar none. I only wish there was more participation, especially from us old farts who have nothing else to do but reminisce about the old days. Vicky, you should start a page titled "Remember When We".. I would have alot of anecdotes to share. Anyway what I really need is a phone number or address for the Sioux Valley News. I want to suscribe to wit. And to "Anonymous" and "Unknown" Go to your room! Okay - Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Only wish I was there for Pheasant season. See you all in June. JimC.

To "Unknown" and "Anonymous": How is it that you can criticize people from Anthon, who have every right in the world to post a message on this web site. It does not matter if someone posts once a day, once a month, or once a year, it is an opportunity for people from Anthon and other areas to post messages and keep in touch. Please don't ruin it by making people feel bad for posting messages and don't personally attack others. Haven't you ever heard the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"?

Hi Anthonites, Just found the Anthon Website today for the 1st time. What a great way to keep up on the 'ole home town.' I too, am interested in knowing more about the fire of 1919 on or near the Beers place 3 mi. south of town. We(Dixons) were raised on what was referred to as the Beers place. I do not recall ever hearing about this tragedy--just now became aware of it from the Webpage. Thanks for taking the time and effort to keep "our" town in the news.

For the person who asked the question about the CHRISTMAS DAY FIRE in regards to the BOLLES family (see guestbook below)- it was 1919. The Anthon Herald Newspaper had a fire and so there are no newspapers until 1924 to look back on, but The Correctionville News dated Thursday, January 1, 1920 had this. [normally I do not go looking for articles for people, or ask the newspaper staff too, but thought this interesting since I had never heard about the fire. I was surprised it was not in the Anthon Centennial book. Such a tragic for any family - at any time. (Thanks to the staff of the newspaper today for helping!) January 1, 1920: Correctionville News Newspaper: Four Lives Lost In Explosion On Christmas: Christmas cheer was swiftly turned to tragedy in the Chas. Bolles home three miles south of Anthon, when a gasoline explosion cost the lives of four. The family had finished eating their Christmas dinner, and in an effort to replenish the kitchen fire which had nearly gone out, Ruby Bolles poured gasoline on the coals. Ruby was so badly burned by the explosion that she died at two the next morning. Opal, aged five, died early the next morning at the St. Vincent hospital in Sioux City, while Willie aged three died in an auto at ten the same evening on the way to the hospital. Mrs. Bolles, the mother, died at noon the following day from burns received in the attempt to rescue the children. The father and six other children ranging from six to 14 years of age, had gone outside and so were unharmed-had they been in the kitchen they could hardly have escaped. The father had been working on the A.O. Beers ranch three miles south of Anthon. *again, thank the newspaper staff for sharing this -in answer to your question about the Christmas Day fire*

Somebody recently contacted me after seeing one of my messages here on this site; The lady is originally from the Anthon area and now lives in Las Vegas, as I do. I have lost her email and address and have not been able to write back to her; I am hopeful that she (or someone else) will see this so we can get back in touch. I do not remember her name, though she did say in her email that her father was a school superintendent long ago in Anthon,I believe; she is a librarian in Las Vegas. I anxiously await a reply. :)

George Holcomb of class of 1940 or so, sends greetings from our home in Miami, the tropical part of the country. My wife, Zuzel Cano of Cuba and I moved here from Washington, DC, where I worked for about 28 years at U.S. Department of Agriculture as a public affairs officer and editor, writing publications, etc. Zuzel worked as a professor at the American University and the Catholic University in Washington, DC, for years. I note classmate Bill Kissinger has a recent message in your guestbook, which is a great contribution to the history of Anthon. Greetings to Bill and all the other alumni of Anthon High, including Leonard Waugh and doubtless others nearby. My mother lived most of her retired life until she was close to her 90's in Anthon, in a house that I helped paint a bit sometimes. Brother David Holcomb still lives out northwest of town on the gravel road to Correctionvill along the Little Sioux river. Regards and thanks. George Holcomb, 305-551-4104

My Mom (Joan Jensen) and I came down from Wisconsin for the Oto Sesquitennial the beginning of June -- which I found out about from the website. What FUN!! Saw high school friends I haven't seen for an unmentionable number of years as well as other old friends. It was just great--haven't had that much fun in years. I wasn't able to attend the alumni get-together this time, but that's in the works for future years. I'm just never sure whether to go to the Anthon-Oto Alumni or the Oto Alumni banquet. I'm from the class of '67--which is my best chance to run into old classmates? Would love to hear from anyone!

I have learned a lot about our great Flag since June 5. I was arriving in Ventura and learned about the passing of former President Raegan. What a week to be there. I was in Simi Valley the evening and saw with my own eyes the Missing Man Flyover formation. WOW! For me it was a closure as I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer 8000 miles from home in a British Crown Coloney when President Kennedy was assinated. I learned while in Ventura that if a flag couldn't be lowered to half staff as a flag in a meeting room that the acceptable and respectable way was to drape the flag with a black ribbon the width of a stripe and the length of the flag. It really makes some sense.

Great site! Also enjoyed looking at all the pictures. I use to visit Anthon every summer growing up. I'll never forget participating in the Kid's Day parade with my cousin Brenda Bainbridge. Lots of great memories coming from Anthon. My grandfather, Clarence Davis, recently passed away at the age of 102! It won't be the same visiting grandma now in the nursing home in Correctionville. I understand a large reunion is underway this weekend. My mom and dad (Maureen(Kennedy) and Don Davis) should be arriving just about now (they live in NC also). I didn't realize dad will be celebrating with his hs class of 1954...50th reunion! WOW! Hope everyone has a great time. Please, Please remember that 60 years ago today, young soldiers, sailor's and airmen of the Allied Powers began the assault on Hitler's Fortress Europe. Many of those young people are buried there in Normandy, not far from where they "hit the beach". These were young men who never got to grow old. Never got to go home again. Never enjoyed the freedoms of the United States again, but with their blood they freed Europe from Evil. Not only American's, but men from England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, France and many more that I am afraid I can't remember. To all those D-Day Veterans, living and dead, I say; "Thank You For What You Did. We Can Never Repay You". May God Bless all Veterans everywhere.

I also noticed a previous posting regarding the RITTS family surname; I am researching that family surname, and would love to try to see if we connect somehow. My 2nd-great grandmother was Adeline Rosella Ritts, who married Daniel Louis Downing approx. 1870. Daniel & Adeline lived in Oto in 1897 when their young daughter died & was buried at Oto cemetery. According to another researcher, the parents of Adeline were Joseph Ritts & Mary Hay.

I was happy to see this site on the internet. Anthon-Oto years are long ago, but not forgotten. Spent many years since graduation moving and traveling, finally settled in South Carolina. Although I enjoyed the years spent there, the Midwest and family drew me back. I am going to try to make the reunion this year, it will be interesting to see who remembers who after all these years.

I have nothing but fond memories of my time growing up in and around Anthon. The class of 94 will be having its 10-year reunion this summer and I would love to be invited. I would love to get caught up with everyone, and talk about old times. I know I didn't graduate from Anthon-Oto, but I would love to see the old gang again. Once again, great job with the website.

I happened on your web page while doing some genealogical research on some ancestors who at various times, lived or were born in Oto, Smithland, Anthon, and Correctionville. Many of them also have ties in additional counties...Plymouth, Guthrie, Audubon, Cherokee. I am researching our Downing, Harris, and Townsend lines. Your town sounds very nice and friendly! My sister, her husband, and I plan to be in your area about the end of July or first week of August, and hope to "uproot" some ancestors. We will be visiting genealogical or historical societies, and other organizations to get birth, death, or marriage records for the ancestors who have eluded us for so long, and may visit some cemeteries also. Warm regards, Wee Las Vegas, NV

I am desperately searching for written definitions and an official source for the term "cutting the colors" and some thing official on moving around a room properly at a meeting where the National Colors are present at the right side of the podium with a group sitting in front of the podium. I hope someone can please site the correct definition and procedure for me with some kind of reference source to document it. Knowing what something as important as this is and not being able to document it is a real problem. Thank you for having such a great website and I pray more will read it and take it to heart.

I received the following E-mail and thought I should share it with our Anthon, Iowa webpage family.... Webmaster Vickie Buettner~ "Hello My name is Mary Lorraine Mchugh, i am a community artist living in Moville Donegal Ireland. It is a long shot really e mailing your web site. A man called John Mcdermot lived in Moville in the 1870s and named Moville Iowa after his home here in Ireland. The parish priest has a picture of the Catholic church in Moville,Iowa so at some stage there must have been links. As an artist i would like to paint on canvas, and photograph Moville Iowa, as well as Moville here in Donegal. I have been the resident artist at Ruskin College Oxford. I would like to have an exhibition called "The Journey." I have been in touch with the Dept of Cultural Affairs,Iowa, who are very enthused by the project. I need people of Moville in Iowa, to sort of be enthused, or it will not happen .Could your website maybe assist by gettting in touch with the community of Moville Iowa for me. Maybe there are even relatives of the Mcdermots who named the town. Kindest Regards Mary Lorraine Mchugh"

RAGBRAI XXX! Anybody from Anthon riding this year? I can't get Frank Wood off his lazy butt to come with me (and he's even got two new knees!) Would love to ride with some Anthon-Oto types; especially anyone from near the Class of 1966 (man that makes me sound old). Best wishes Vicki and keep up the great Anthon site.

Hi Everyone in Anthon-Oto. Just came across the website - this is great. It's been over 20 years since moving out of Iowa. My husband (Arthur) and I own a motel in Laconia New Hampshire called the Birch Knoll Motel. Visit our web site at www.birchknollmotel.com. I'm the County Administrator & Finance Officer for Belknap County and we have two children - Katie, age 9 and Adam, age 8. I welcome any e-mails to try and connect with old classmates and friends. Hi Oto. My grandparents moved their many years ago to raise their kids. I last saw them when I was 4 and 5 years old (1955-56) when first my grandmother and then my grandfather passed away. I loved the small town, the Saturnday night movies on the wall of the building downtown, the ice cream cones, my grandpa's office, their wonderful house with the cellar and "indoor" plumbing, and all the sweet, fond memories I have of those few precious years. Best wishes to all of you and blessings to my grandparents, Dr. George and Effie Rinker. Sylvia, daughter of Peggy (Julia Margaret Rinker).

Website has a nice overview, but much information is ommitted. For instance, what is your student enrollment? How many children are enrolled in Special Ed classes and in remedial reading and math? What is your student-teacher ratio? What is the base pay of your teachers and the salaries of your administrators? What extra curricular activites do you sponsor? How many of your graduates go on to college? This is the type of information I want to know about your school system. The hobbies, interests etc., of school staff is only important to others only if they plan on sharing their hobby or areas of expertise and interest with others. And if so, how do they plan on doing this? If this information already exists on your website, I guess I missed it. I would appreciate some feedback; Surely, I am not the only one who is intersted in this information.

I just turned 60 this past October 21. I grew up in California, travelled and lived around the world, and presently live in Florida. Over 60 years I had never met another person named Anthon, nor had I ever found any object or thing named Anthon until I found your town on a map. I would love to know how Anthon, Iowa got its name. I know nothing about my own name and my parents were never in Iowa or near Iowa their entire lives. I have no idea how they ever came to decide upon my name. I would love to visit your area some day. Thank you.

How grand that Anthon has a website. The memories of growing up in the Little Sioux Valley are priceless. Somehow driving into this "quaint" little town just takes my breath away. I am looking forward to returning this June for the class reunion. If anyone from the class of '71 is interested in a "gathering" that weekend, please send me a note. And if you're not interested, send me a note anyway. I have lived in Oklahoma City for over 20 years now. We enjoyed this website. We get to Anthon a number of times a year to visit my mother. I am retiring this June after 31 years of teaching in Fairmont, Minnesota. I also taught 6 years at West Monona, Onawa, Iowa at the start of my career. We plan on traveling now. In August we go to Cooperstown, New York, to Kirby Puckett's Baseball Hall of Fame Induction and after that go on a 15-day trip to Alaska. Great job on the website!!!!

I just can't believe it!!! Good old Anthon, like cream, rising to the top just like in the old days. I graduated in 1944 and have been scanning the Sioux City journal obits every morning for news of Anthon. The Anthon-Oto Alumni Assoc. newsletter received today gave me this site. Best news in months. Who remembers me up there? I'll bet no one.

I am doing genealogical research; my father Bernard Fahey was born in the rural Anthon area (we believe) December 15,1903. Can anyone direct me to Public or church records of that era?

Thank you, Thank you Vickie! I've been looking for something like this since 1995. Now I've found it. This is a great Web site. I lived in Anthon from 1941 to the early 60's. I can proudly say that when someone asks me where I'm from I always say Anthon Iowa ( whether they know where that's at or not!). I will visit this page often since I stopped getting the Anthon Herald. Keep up the good work! Bill Fey

Am looking for information on Hultsch and Morris families. My grandfather was, I believe, school principal in the 1890s, and led the community band. Any leads will be appreciated! Thanks...I hope to visit one of these days.

What a wonderful "find" when this wonderful webpage came up. I've stopped getting the Anthon Herald so seeing the obits and births is especially interesting....though somewhat sad when I see class mates like Francis Heath dying and past mentors like Francis Meyer and wonderful moms like Joan White and Doris O'Connell listed. Jack and Helen (my parents) would have been very proud of this website, as am I. Best wishes from Florida and I hope to be back to our 35th *ugh) reunion this summer.
